The purification of water using resins changes the physical chemistry of water and is able to remove dissolved solids, salts and ions. There are two general types of ion exchange water purification resin: cation and anion resins.


Cation - A cation is an ion with a negative charge. Common cations include calcium, magnesium, iron and hydrogen.

Anion - An anion is an ion with a positive charge. Common anion include chlorine, sulphate, and hydroxide.

Chemically, both types are similar and belong to a group of compounds called polymers, which are extremely large molecules that are formed by the combination of many molecules of one or two compounds in a repeating structure that produces long chains. Physically, are formed in the shape of very small beads, called resin beads.

The cation and anion resins purify water by ion exchange. Different products remove different ions.

Anion is the negatively charged ion and anion exchanger is regenerated by 10-15% NaOH solution and water released from anion bed has pH between 7.5 and 9.5. Cation is pstively charged ion and anion bed is regnerated by 8.12 % hyrochlorico acid soluton and pH of water rleaede tom the anion bed remains beween 2 and 3.
